One Great Hour of Sharing Offering

When:   March 28, 2010 from 10:30am - 11:45am
Where:  Sanctuary

OGHS begins with the first Sunday of Lent and ends on Palm Sunday.
The theme this year is “Do You Love Me? Feed My Sheep.” Sixty years ago, in response to the devastation of WWII, a Saturday evening nationwide radio broadcast asked Americans to give generously the next morning in their churches.  More than 75,000 churches responded then, and now many Christian denominations work together cooperatively to create resources that interpret the offering.  Through the Presbyterian Church USA, the gifts are roughly divided into thirds:  Presbyterian Hunger Program, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and Self-Development of People. More information will be coming in a letter to the congregation and in Mission Moments.

36% goes to Presbyterian Hunger Program for ministries working to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes, responding with compassion and justice to poor and hungry people in local communities, in the nation, and throughout the world, as well as ministries addressing homelessness and affordable housing.

32% goes to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for disaster response.

32% goes to Self-Development of People for partnerships with groups of people who are oppressed by poverty or social systems, who want to take charge of their own lives, have organized to do something about their own condition, and have decided what they need to do to produce long-term benefits for themselves.
